Pueblo academy holds protest demanding district releases school charter

UEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) – A few dozen students and staff members of the Chavez-Huerta Preparatory Academy rallied outside the District 60 Administration Building in Pueblo on Tuesday.

The protestors demand that the district release their charter so they can take the necessary steps to possibly be chartered under the state or another district.

The district announced in January that they will not be renewing the school’s carter due to financial reasons.

The executive director of the academy says they have been waiting months to be released.

“They will release us, they have said that already, but we need to be released earlier so we can get the ball rolling on being independent and finding a different avenue.”

“The Board’s decision on January 28th was appealed to the State Board of Education on February 28th under the Charter Schools Act,” District 60 said in a statement.

“The State Board of Education rules control the procedures and timeline, and we are following that process. The State Board of Education is scheduled to have a hearing on May 15th.”
